Race with Ventilators

Dressing ventilators up in outlandish costumes might not seem like a way to gain attention for the profession, but therapists all across the country will tell you it does the trick – if you’re willing to get out in the hospital parking lot or another public area with your fellow therapists and race them around a track. Races have been held from Utah (pictured here) to Maryland. Sponsored by the American Respiratory Care Foundation, these fundraising events brought in thousands of dollars for community lung health initiatives and gave everyone a chance to blow off a little steam at the same time. Says Bryan Wattier, who helped put on one of the events in Minnesota, “Mechanical ventilators literally breathe life back into people who cannot breathe on their own, so we thought, what better machine to use in a fundraising event aimed at breathing new life into important projects to improve lung health.”
